How to Overcome Emotional Eating and Spending!

Do you ever struggle with emotional eating or spending money to numb?

Today, I wanted to touch base regarding emotional eating, overspending and practical steps to take toward wellness.

Unfortunately, emotional eating can have a major impact on our all around physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial health.

Have you found yourself going to food, overeating or even using food to numb emotions? Many times, food is our first go to when we feel stressed, anxious and especially when dealing with grief. It may feel good for a moment but long-term doing this will create unhealthy habits and impact our overall health. Plus, can be watched by others and even children as a mechanism to deal with our emotions. Many other unhealthy habits may include alcohol, staying over committed, obsessive cleaning and shopping. These are the typical ways people dealing with unresolved emotions want to numb instead of working through the pain.

I wanted to share s few resources, ideas and what has helped me during peak emotional times, my own personal grief and hard seasons.

Last Spring, I attended and walked through a grief support class that truly helped me on this journey toward healing, hope and resilience.

A few things that help me are meeting with a counselor on a regular basis. I enjoy having a counselor to talk out any challenges, stressors, or areas of life that need some resolve.

Do you have a counselor, mentor, doctor, nutritionist, health/life coach, and pastor you can meet with. Especially if you unresolved trauma.

Here are some self-care ideas to try to gravitate instead of emotional eating, spending money and other unhealthy habits.

  1. Get outdoors and exercise.

  2. Enjoy time with God and express to Him your feelings and emotions. Even if those emotions include anger and disappointment.

  3. Massages

  4. Laughter

  5. Spending time with family and friends.

  6. Mindfulness eating (cut out distractions by putting the phone away while eating)

  7. Enjoy your favorite hobby

  8. Gardening

  9. Journaling & gratitude is very helpful. Take time to write out what you are thankful for.

  10. Prayer and fasting

Bible verses I cling to during hard times:

When I need Peace:
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13

When I need Courage vs Fear:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9-10

Overcoming Grief and Loss:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.  2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Stressed, Weary and Tired:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.  Matthew 11:28

Would you like prayer? If so, how can I be praying for you?  Feel free to respond with your prayer requests.

Blessings,
Lisa Hice
